Can NRI, OCI or PIO make Aadhar Card in India?
Aadhaar Card is one of the most important identity proofs in India. A 12-digit unique code generated as Aadhaar Card number is considered to be the safest and most secured way to identify an Indian citizen. Almost in every single government related activity an Indian citizen needs to link his/her aadhaar card number. In recent times the Indian government has taken another step towards the globalisation where they have declared that Indians who are living in other countries will also get Aadhaar Card. Though there is no such official launch of the event as of now but there are things that one should know about it.
Aadhaar Card to NRIs / OCIs
If you are living outside India and holding the citizenship of that country then you can get Aadhaar Card as well. According to Prime Minister of India Shree Narendra Modi, Indian people who are living in UK, US or any other countries for a long time due to work or any other reasons can now apply for Aadhaar Card in India.
Till now people who are the residents of India could only apply for the Aadhaar Card but from now onwards Non-Residential Indians aka NRIs can also apply for Aadhaar Card in India. The Modi government has also stated that people who have overseas citizenship can also get their 12-digit unique Aadhaar number in India.
GoI said that this rule has started for the people who are away from their home and now it is time for them to get back to their roots. Those who are holding overseas citizenship can also apply for Aadhaar Card.
Procedure to get Aadhaar Card for NRIs
- For the NRIs / OCIs to apply for the Aadhaar, the applicant must be presented in-person in any enrolment centre. No online application or online request will be applicable here.
- The applicant needs to present in-person in the enrolment centre to submit the filled up application form (just like the Indian citizens). He/she needs to bring some documents along with the form.
- Photo, Retina details and finger prints will be taken there in the centre by the officials. The documents that will be presented will be verified by the officials and once everything is at their place the 12-digit unique Aadhaar number will be generated.
Required Documents
To get the Aadhaar Card one needs to submit these documents:
Identity Proof, Address proof, Passport, Age Proof, Overseas Citizenship details (in case of OCIs) and proof of Indian origin. Once all the documents presented by the applicant be verified the Aadhaar card will be generated.
Who can apply for Aadhaar Card?
People who belong to Indian origin but live in other countries can apply for Aadhaar. Non-residential Indians holding other country’s citizenship can also apply. OCI holders are also eligible to apply for the Aadhaar Card.
Aadhaar Card Status
Once you have submitted the form and required documents it takes 60 to 90 days on an average to generate unique aadhaar number. In between the applicant can anytime check their aadhaar status by online status checking process.
Go to UIDAI’s official website and you will find the link for checking your Aadhaar status. Click on the link and you will be redirected to the page where a tiny form will be shown to be filled by the applicant.
After providing details like enrolment ID, date and time of the registration and registered mobile number you can check your aadhaar status instantly. Click on the ‘check’ button to view the status.
Aadhaar for NRI launch
As of now officially there is no launch date. The PM said it is the time for get back to home for the NRIs but no official date has announced.
