Car density

Mumbai is one of the major metropolitan cities in India. According to a recent statistics, Mumbai ranks first in terms of car density in the country. For every Km, more than 400 private cars are there in the city. Over 1000 cars are added daily to Mumbai’s car population.

Rise in cars

The major rise in the reason for rise in cars is the increase in people’s ability to buy a car and also due to availability of low priced cars. The rise is also due to non-availability of comfortable transport for the public at a larger scale in the city.

Car parking issue

Mumbai ranks first in the world in terms of population density. More than thirty thousand people reside for every Sq. Km in the city. It is almost twenty percent larger than Kolkata which is second in the rankings next to Mumbai. Since the car density is on the rise, parking issues is also on the rise.

Pay for Park

In order to resolve the parking issues, BMC introduce pay for park scheme in the metro. The parking areas were divided in to three categories based on their locations. Depending upon their locations, parking rates were fixed. The opposition parties and the people were against its implementation. As a result, the court issued a stay on its implementation.

Stay lifted

The court has now lifted its stay and this policy would come into effect after the BMC elections in February. Tenders will be announced for on street and off street parking. There will be two slots for parking. The night slot will be from 8 P.M to 8 A.M. and the other slot will be from 8 A.M to 8 P.M. However, a car owner can avail only one of the slots.

Parking charges

  • Areas such as Kala Ghoda will be coming under the first category. Parking in those areas will cost around sixty rupees an hour. Areas such as Ghatkopar-mahul will be coming under the third category. They will be charged one-third of first category amount. So parking will cost around twenty rupees per hour in that area.
  • The parking charges will be different during holidays and weekend. Tourist spots like Gateway, Juhu Chowpatty and Girgaun will have free parking facilities to encourage tourism.
