DIAL seeks green nod for T4 terminal at IGI Delhi
The number of passengers making air travels in the Indian nation is on the rise due to the reduced air fares offered by many Indian airlines. The fall of crude oil price is also one of the reasons for fall in air fares. The number of passengers travelling in domestic and international flights increased around 20%, in 2016. The main reason would be government intervention on fixing the domestic fares for air travelling.
IGIA
IGIA in Delhi crossed the five crore passenger mark and became the first Indian airport to do so. It is almost twenty percent higher than its nearest competitor, Mumbai. Delhi along with Mumbai handles around sixty six percent of India’s air traffic.
Traffic problem
As the number of passengers is on the rise, IGIA is facing difficulty in handling the traffic. Currently, it has three terminals. The passengers face huge problems especially in T1 during the peak hours. Even the roads leading to that terminal are flooded with cars and reaching or leaving the terminal during the peak hours is a nightmare to the travelers.
DIAL’s rearrangement
Due to heavy domestic traffic, it has rescheduled around twenty percent of its flights in peak hours to less traffic hours. The three major domestic service providers are IndiGo, GoAir and Spice jet. They contribute to more than sixty percent of the air traffic. The airport authorities have planned to move spice jet and GoAir flights to the second terminal since they together operate around seventy planes. Whereas, IndiGo will continue its operation in T1 as it operates more than 125 planes. Under Phase 3a, T1 will be expanded by 2020.
New airport
Mumbai and delhi can handle the traffic by opening a new airport. Building a new airport is a difficult task since getting a huge land near the metropolitan cities is very difficult. However, the traffic handling capacity can be increased by increasing the number of terminals.
New Terminal
- The ministry of aviation gave approval for extension of IGIA. IGIA has got the plan for a new terminal with a huge budget approved. However, environmental clearances are to be completed before the commencement of new runway construction.
- The extension will be done by removing the centaur hotel owned by Air Inida (AI). However, AI will be compensated by providing an alternative land of same size in another place.
- Under the phase 3b, T4 will be constructed similar to T3 and it is expected to be ready by 2025. This will help to increase its traffic handling capacity to more than nine crore per annum. T4 and T1 will be used for domestic traffic.
