Delhi LG Anil Baijal Biography | Anil Baijal Vs Arvind Kejriwal
Former Union home Secretary Mr. Anil Baijal has been appointed as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor recently after Najeeb Jung resigned office. The latter’s resignation came as a surprise to the most of the lot because he still has 18 months left in his tenure.
Najeeb Jung’s Resignation Controversy
Talking about his reason for resignation, Jung said that he wants to return to academics which were always his “first love”. However, if one looks closely at the current state of politics in the state, it is clear that the minister was having a rough time with the political tussle between CM Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party government.
Kejriwal however maintained his calm in the press and expressed his shock saying that “Jung’s resignation is a surprise” to him. He also wished the former Lieutenant General for his further ventures.
Amidst this, the government needed to appoint someone immediately and Anil Baijal was considered for the post. His name was cleared by the President on Wednesday after the government had nominated him.
Things to note about the new LG
- Bajilal also served as the member of executive council of Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) after his retirement. He was also the Indian Administrative services office of the 1969 batch.
- He was however removed from the position of Union Home Secretary in 2004 after the UPA government came into power. He was appointed as the Home Secretary again later, but in the same year, he was surprisingly again transferred to the Civil Aviation Secretariat department.
- After retirement he has served in the board of many corporate houses. But before that in the year 2006 he served as the secretary in Urban Ministry.
- He holds dual masters degree one from University of East Anglia in Development Economics and another from the University of Allahabad.
Challenges before the new LG
The former LG Mr. Najeeb Jung accused CM Arvind Kejriwal of trying to run the administration of the state by himself. He had several run-ins with the government. This can become a challenge for the Baijal too. To top it, there are the obvious implications of trying to run the judiciary of a Union Territory acting as a country’s capital.
So the responsibilities and the challenges before the new LG are laid out.
About the past of Baijal
It must be noted that Baijal was somehow connected to Kashmir’s sensitive issue in the past. Apparently he was tipped off to replace NN Vohra (as the governor) of Jammu and Kashmir. However the move did not succeed and it resulted in the killing of Hizbul Mujahedeen. This took place on the eve of July 8 and it led to a mass uprising in the area. Some even went on to say that this was the very event which led to the deterioration of the law and order situation in the border.
After this incident, the center decided that it is best not to change the Governor at this point.
