CBSE makes 6 subjects mandatory for Class X board Exams

CBSE makes 6 subjects mandatory for Class X board Exams

CBSE has recently introduced certain changes in the curriculum for class X. This change is the addition of on more subjects, as compulsory, for the students to appear in exams for, in the year 2018. Till the session gone by, there were only five subjects that they studied; now students will have 6 subjects.

Till the last session, there were two languages, math, science and SST. The sixth subject made mandatory was an optional thing. It was a part of the vocational course. Now, these subject/ course is n more an option, it is mandatory.

NSQF

National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) is the main reason behind this change. While Central Board of Secondary Education pondered over it, it was made compulsory for the session coming and thereafter as well, after application of several permutations and combinations.

CBSE mandatory for class x board Exams

It is done to keep the ‘best of five factors’ with respect. If at all the student fails to pass in any of the lead subjects, like math, science or SST, this subject will guard them well. This is what was derived from the circular issued by the CBSE.

The subject to choose from

For the sixth subject, CBSE has released a list of 13 subjects for students to choose from. These subjects are related to many streams such as technology, banking, beauty and healthcare. It is totally up to the discretion of the student to choose.

Additional information

Some of the additional features are:-

  • If failed to pass in any of the primary subjects, if the student wishes to reappear, they may do so.
  • Students for the sixth subject have multiple choices. They have in all ‘13’ options to choose from.
  • TO pass, in each subject, minimum of 33%, for both (board and internal assessment) is needed. 33% marks to pass has been there since ages.

When it comes to reappearing for the exams, it is the same thing as before-compartment examination. Any may appear for it, but, with the sixth subject in hand, if at all a candidate fails to pass in one of the main subjects, he/she will have the sixth subject as countable for passing the session. Currently to pass in any subject, you need to have minimum of 33% marks.

Changes for class XII

There have been reports stating the decline in the number of candidates appearing for the board examination. Be it for class X or XII, the decrease is in for both the classes. For class XII, just like class X, there are options too to choose from, but they are 34 for them (13 for class X)

Conclusion

One of the key highlights is, the vocational subject will work as the support system for the students. Failing in one subject, the marks will get replaced by the marks scored in the additional subject.

As per several reports, there was decline in the number of students who appear for class X and XII exams.  This move has been initiated to encourage more students appear for class X exams, at least.  ‘rashritya saksharta’ mission, indeed efforts are being put in towards it attainment.
